*Our meeting will be held via Zoom and we encourage individuals (far and wide) to submit lightning round proposals and attend

Submission form —– >   https://form.jotform.com/220584589715164
 (deadline: April 20, 2022)

During the last two years, libraries have relied on social media more heavily for online marketing and outreach. As libraries have slowly re-opened, we have gained considerable expertise in using social media for marketing and outreach purposes.

Some libraries have increased their engagement on social media by producing videos for Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. Some have ventured into new territory like TikTok and have created compelling video content.

What new social media practices did you learn (during COVID) that you will continue to use? What worked and what did not?

For our spring 2022 meeting, we seek short, lightning round presentations that showcase the new social media marketing techniques you have initiated during COVID.

Some question prompts for our spring 2022 meeting:

  1. How has your library been involved in developing new social media marketing activities and initiatives in response to COVID?
  2. How are you using social media differently ?
  3. What social media expertise and knowledge did you learn during COVID?
  4. What social media marketing practices did you utilize during COVID that are going to stay?

Fall 2021 meeting via Zoom

ACRL National | Library Marketing & Outreach (LMOIG) Interest Group | Greater NYC Meetup|

Fall 2021 virtual meeting: Library Marketing in the Time of COVID Fri., Nov. 19, 2021 – 3:00pm-4:45pm (via Zoom meeting)

We’re pleased to present 6 dynamic “lightning round” presentations about how libraries and library workers responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with strategic communications, engaging outreach activities and programming, and virtual promotions that helped raise the importance of the library during the last 18 months.

Lightning Round Presenters – (15-20 mins)

1.       Communication During a Crisis: Keeping Our Patrons Informed During the COVID-19 Pandemic

View presentation here

Michelle Ehrenpreis and John DeLooper, Lehman College, CUNY

This presentation discusses the communications strategy used by the Leonard Lief Library to keep its patrons informed during the COVID-19 crisis. The Leonard Lief Library at Lehman College (CUNY) deliberately chose to focus on regular updates to its website, social media, and research guides. The aim of these updates was to effectively convey timely information about service changes, library resources, and to improve outreach activities to its patron community even as the library’s physical building was closed to students, faculty, and staff.

2.       Don’t Forget to Press Record: Adventures in Pandemic Podcasting

Amanda Tarbet, MGH Institute of Health Professions

View presentation here

Eager to get the word out about library services and document the student research happening during the pandemic, the Bellack Library at MGH Institute of Health Professions embarked on a DIY podcasting experiment. This lightning talk will summarize how we made “Evidence-Based IHP” and discuss our successes and failures.

3.     Showing the world one drawing at a time: The Rutgers Urban Sketching Project Fall 2020

Megan Lotts, Rutgers University

View presentation here

Urban Sketching encouraged our campuses to think about life in new ways during a stressful time. During the pandemic, people needed activities to help them connect, share, and escape their everyday lives. Sketching daily life elevated seemingly mundane moments, allowing us to see our own world from a different perspective.

4.     Student Partnerships during COVID

Gary Marks, Jr. , William Paterson University of NJ

View presentation here

The Cheng Library at William Paterson University saw significant success working with student organizations to overcome the in-person challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. This lightning talk will outline the development of those partnerships and the success of having student groups market and promote the library.

5.  Cooking Up Engagement with the Great Rare Books Bake Off

Mark Mattson and Christina Riehman-Murphy , Penn State University Libraries

View presentation here

During pandemic lockdowns, Penn State and Monash University Libraries leveraged their international partnership for a fun online engagement event. Inspired by the UCLA and Folger’s Great Library Pie Bake Off, the partners developed a Great Rare Books Bake Off to engage their users with their special collections and the partnership.

6. Open Scholarship for the Public Good

Elvis Bakaitis, CUNY Graduate Center

Presentation not available.

Throughout the COVID-19 closures, the Mina Rees Library has sought to maintain a strong public presence – with a virtual Symposium and Conversation Series. The presentation will discuss programming initiatives supported by two funding sources: Doctoral Curriculum Enhancement grant and Transformative Learning in the Humanities grant.

Fall 2019 meeting: Promoting Libraries to Non-Traditional Students

Thurs. Nov. 21, 2019 – 2:30pm-4:00pm
Berkeley College, Manhattan Campus
3 East 43rd street,  room 305
2:30pm-4:00pmLight refreshments will be served!

Lightning Round Presenters – (15-20 mins)

1.       Reaching out to tired, busy, adult students: Rigorous Roundtables and Personal Librarians
Kate Adler, Director of Library Services, Metropolitan College of New York

After years of struggling to find programming that is relevant to our non-traditional student population, we’ve stumbled upon a template that seems to be working well. This presentation will discuss two such events;  “Pizza and Conversation”, a monthly roundtable discussion with topics chosen by the community and by library staff (on rotating basis) and facilitated by someone in the school community, a staff person or a faculty member. In addition, we have piloted a “Personal Librarian” program with students in our Welfare to Careers program.

2.      Streamlining Library Access for Online Students
Stephen Walker, Head of Access Services, Lehman College, CUNY
[Access Presentation Materials]

For the past several years members of an Urban Public College have been implementing changes to student library access. These changes include student off campus database access, automating Library barcodes, and the creation of digital ID cards.  This process was a joint effort taken in step stages from members of the Library, Information Technology, and Campus Security.  Through the coordination of these offices, students no longer have to activate their library accounts in person, thereby granting them access to digital resources upon the start of the semester.

3.      Welcoming Those Who Served: Library Outreach to Military and Veteran Students.
Laurel Scheinfeld and Kate Kasten-Mutkus, Stony Brook University Libraries, SUNY
[Access Presentation Materials]

During the 2018 – 2019 academic year, Stony Brook University Libraries worked under the aegis of a campus diversity grant to create programming and collections which would directly benefit military and veteran students while at the same time making their experiences more visible to others in the campus community.  Librarians invited an off-campus speaker, himself a former U. S. Army captain and an award-winning novelist, in addition to collaborating with the Long Island State Veterans Home and Office of Veterans Affairs to organize a lunch with Veterans Home residents and veteran students, staff, and faculty members.

4.     Designing Engaging Outreach for Online Students Using Web-Based Tools
Maria Deptula and Jessica Kiebler, Berkeley College Online Campus
[Access Presentation Materials]

The Berkeley College Online Campus provides a distance learning education to students from around the world. Distance education technology provides these students with a robust online education, however, it can be challenging for librarians to engage fully with these students, educate them on using the library and teach research skills.  Berkeley College librarians have developed a wide variety of outreach methods to reach online students using web-based tools and the Springshare suite of products including LibGuides and LibWizard.

5.     Student Athletes: Library Outreach & Engagement Strategies (virtual presentation)
James Murphy, Outreach Librarian, University of Calgary

Student athletes can prove to be a challenging group for the library and library staff to connect with. They are often on the road and have training demands that put pressure on the already busy student schedule. This presentation will review ideas, strategies and programs that academic libraries or school libraries can use to connect with this group. This session will explore the hurdles and successes that the University of Calgary Libraries have had over the past few years trying to improve the information literacy skills of this important student group.

Promoting Libraries Using the Web and Social MediaIMG_9043

Lightning Rounds Talks (10-15 mins):

Birren Button Campaign
Alexandra O’Keefe, Yale University
The Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library at Yale University is completing a six-month plan wherein one major goal is to increase followers across three social media platforms. One initiative was the “Birren Button Campaign,” a giveaway designed to engage patrons (primarily students) in the physical library space to lead them to our virtual spaces. The use of marketing both on and off social media, the opportunity to highlight collections, and the outcomes of the campaign will be discussed.

Establishing a Consistent Social Media Presence: A Team Effort  [View PPT]
Laurel Scheinfeld and Stacey Horath , Stony Brook University, SUNY

In November 2017, the Library created a social media subgroup was created to formalize and organize our social media presence.  We chose campaigns to run each weekday on the library’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.  Workflows were created for the systematic promotion of library events and these workflows have been adjusted and improved upon over time as needed and will likely always be a work in progress.  In this presentation, we will share some of the processes and tools that we have found useful.

Promoting the Library Online During National Library Week
Gary Marks, Jr., Williams Patterson University

During National Library Week 2018, our academic library launched its first ever multi-dimensional PR campaign. Adapting the resources provided by ALA to fit the academic audience, we used a collaborative campaign using web, social media, and in-house marketing tools. Our efforts resulted in great success and disappointment, as we reflected and analyzed the impact of our campaign efforts.

Promoting Kanopy Updates Using LibGuides [view PPT]
Sheena Philogene, Brooklyn College, CUNY

This lightning talk will discuss how we use LibGuides to providing patrons with updates about our Kanopy streaming video collection. Often, faculty at Brooklyn College request access to films on Kanopy for use by students with their classes, so new titles are constantly being added (and removed) from the our Kanopy collection. To inform our students about the available titles, we created a Kanopy LibGuide that highlights our available titles, direct links to videos, and a countdown for each title, so users know how long we will have access to each film.
